The Science of Cannabis Terpenes: Unlocking Flavor, Aroma, and Effects

Cannabis is a plant full of complexity, offering a unique experience for every user. While much attention is given to cannabinoids like THC and CBD, another group of compounds plays an equally critical role: terpenes. These naturally occurring aromatic molecules are responsible for the distinct flavors, aromas, and even effects associated with different cannabis strains. In this blog, we’ll dive into the fascinating science of terpenes, exploring their role in shaping your cannabis experience.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are organic compounds found in many plants, not just cannabis. They are responsible for the characteristic scents of lavender, pine, citrus fruits, and more. In cannabis, terpenes are produced in the same glandular trichomes that produce cannabinoids. Over 100 unique terpenes have been identified in cannabis, each contributing to a strain's signature profile.

How Terpenes Affect the Cannabis Experience

Flavor and Aroma

Terpenes are the reason why strains like Blueberry Kush smell fruity, while OG Kush has a pungent, earthy aroma. Whether you prefer sweet, spicy, or herbal notes, terpenes are the chemical artists crafting the sensory symphony.

Enhanced Effects

Terpenes don’t just influence taste and smell; they interact synergistically with cannabinoids in what’s known as the entourage effect. This means terpenes can enhance or modify the effects of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids, offering a more nuanced experience.

Therapeutic Benefits

Many terpenes also have therapeutic properties. For instance, some may promote relaxation, improve focus, or alleviate stress, making them valuable components in both recreational and medicinal cannabis.

Common Cannabis Terpenes and Their Effects

1. Myrcene

  • Flavor/Aroma: Earthy, musky, with hints of cloves

  • Effects: Known for its sedative and relaxing properties, myrcene is often found in indica-dominant strains.

  • Therapeutic Uses: May help with pain relief and insomnia.

2. Limonene

  • Flavor/Aroma: Citrus-like, reminiscent of lemons

  • Effects: Uplifting and mood-enhancing, often present in sativa-dominant strains.

  • Therapeutic Uses: May reduce stress and anxiety.

3. Pinene

  • Flavor/Aroma: Piney, fresh, and herbal

  • Effects: Known for enhancing alertness and memory.

  • Therapeutic Uses: May help with asthma and inflammation.

4. Linalool

  • Flavor/Aroma: Floral, with lavender undertones

  • Effects: Calming and soothing, commonly found in indica-dominant strains.

  • Therapeutic Uses: May reduce stress, anxiety, and pain.

5. Caryophyllene

  • Flavor/Aroma: Spicy, peppery

  • Effects: Unique for its ability to interact with the body’s CB2 receptors, offering anti-inflammatory benefits.

  • Therapeutic Uses: May help with chronic pain and anxiety.

The Entourage Effect: Terpenes + Cannabinoids = Magic

Cannabis is more than just THC or CBD in isolation. The interaction between terpenes and cannabinoids creates a synergistic effect that amplifies the overall experience. For example:

  • Myrcene may increase THC's sedative properties.

  • Pinene may counteract some of THC’s short-term memory effects.

Understanding terpenes can help you choose strains that align with your desired effects, whether you're seeking relaxation, focus, or pain relief.

What Missouri Patients Should Know:

You may have noticed a major change in our text communications and advertising lately. In July, Missouri’s Medical Marijuana Regulatory Agency (Department of Health and Human Services) warned Missouri dispensaries that they may be in violation of state regulations by advertising sales, discounts, or specific products. Dispensaries were directed to stop any type of promotional advertising/events immediately. According to an email that was acquired by the St. Louis Dispatch, “The Department views a promotional event as an activity, advertisement, or publicity designed to increase interest in purchasing medical marijuana or a particular product or brand of medical marijuana. For example, facilities are not allowed to advertise price discounts on a particular product because that would result in disbursing medical marijuana as part of a promotional event. “

In other words, our social media, text messaging service, and any other advertising has been greatly restricted except for very basic information. We realize how frustrating this has been  and want to make sure we do our best to communicate with our Patients, while remaining compliant with state regulations. As the medical program continues to mature in Missouri, we have nothing but “high hopes 😉” for new law interpretations and freedom of advertising, but in the meantime, we want to thank our Patients for sticking it out with us as we all continue to blaze the way for legal cannabis in Missouri.

Medical Marijuana & Gun Rights in Missouri

Medical Marijuana & Gun Rights in Missouri

Second Amendment Preservation Act

I’m sure you’ve heard it by now- “I’m not getting my medical marijuana license because I don’t want to lose my gun rights.” This is one if not the most common reason many Missouri residents are hesitant to apply for their medical marijuana licenses. There is so much information out there between laws, articles, rules, regulations, social media, and everything in between it can become overwhelming trying to find credible information. We want to help untangle some of the misconceptions. Let’s start with what we know to be true:

Truth #1: Medical Marijuana is legal for card holders in MO per constitutional amendment 2 Article XIV Section1.

Truth #2: Marijuana is unfortunately still illegal in all forms at the federal level.

Truth #3: The 10th Amendment to the American Constitution delegates police powers to the state- legal marijuana at the state level is a direct result of this amendment

Truth #4: Missouri passed an emergency clause early this summer protecting the gun rights of medical marijuana patients. The bill, “Declares that laws, rules, orders, or other actions that collect data, restrict or prohibit the manufacture, ownership, and use of firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition exclusively within THIS STATE exceed the powers granted to the federal government except to the extent they are necessary.”

So what does all of that jargon mean for you, a Missouri resident and likely a Missouri Medical Marijuana patient? Bottom line, when it comes to Missouri residents, Medical Marijuana patients will NOT be denied their right to PURCHASE or POSSESS firearms. Please always consult a lawyer for any legal advice.

New Year’s Resolutions

New Years Resolutions

The Art of Mindful Goal Setting

How’s that New Year’s resolution going? If you answered great then this post isn’t for you. If you answered, \” not well\” then you’d be resonating with 80% of New Year’s resolutioners. The stats tell us that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. Why is that?

The reality is, often New Year\’s resolutions don\’t stick because we set really big goals and expect really big results in a short period of time. When we treat the marathon like a sprint the odds of burn the odds of burn out increase significantly. One of the most common resolutions is weight loss. We\’ve all been there, three weeks deep on KETO- or whatever else your fitness Pinterest account suggested and the only thing the scale show is half a pound lost. Instant discouragement sets in, feelings of failure ensue and suddenly you’re drowning your sorrows at Krispy Kreme. What if there was a different way that ensured longevity and success, and didn’t make you feel like you had to change your entire life overnight?

The most successful people recognize that working smarter not harder can be the key to longevity. In this case, working smarter towards a New Year’s resolution means setting bite-size, attainable goals- allowing space to celebrate the small wins along the way. Celebrating the small wins is an effective technique that can help keep you engaged and motivated for the next goal ahead.

You may have heard it by now, but if you haven’t, mindfulness is another solid technique for behavior change and goal setting. To put it simply, mindfulness is a holistic practice of experiencing the present moment. It’s been noted that individuals who practice mindfulness are better goal setters because they tend to pick goals that are in direct alignment with their values and beliefs, resulting in a much higher success rate when it comes to achieving goals.

So even if that New Year’s resolution isn’t going as well as you initially planned, there’s still hope. You don’t have to throw out a month of progress just because you didn’t lose 50lbs or save $100,000 before February 1st. You don’t have to set a New Year’s resolution to change a behavior or start something new, you just need the right mindset and a little self-love because as it turns out, slow & steady really does win the race.
